Natural Hoofcare Workshop in Crete: Day 1
Hello! So, I went to Sitia to meet Andrea and attend her workshop on natural hoofcare. It took me one hour to reach Sitia via a complex network of winding roads and small, picturesque villages. As I was driving along the coastline and later around the mountains, I admit that I struggled with focusing on the hundreds of dangerous turns with the breathtaking view of the sea which was shining under the morning sun. I arrived at the place at around 10:15 a.m., a little dizzy but excited by the schedule of the day that I had ahead of me. My practical experience with natural horsemanship is none and I looked…

Natural hoofcare workshop in Crete
Hello again! Andrea-Patrizia Wiener-Angelakis invites us to her farm “With Horses Here and Now”, where she will deliver a two-day seminar on looking after the equine foot. The course will take place between from 14 to 15 October 2017 and here follows the announcement: “Every horse comes into this world healthy and barefoot with the potential to follow the herd from day one into rocky trails and harsh grounds for many, many miles. So why is that your horse has to wear metal shoes? Usually, we put shoes on our horses when they become of age to be ridden or to start working. This happens out of habit or out…

Event: Horsemanship experiential workshop “You Can Do That Too” in Crete
Who is up for learning in Crete this summer? There is a notable opportunity for those of you who want to spend some of their summertime developing their horsemanship skills. The farm “With Horses Here and Now” is hosting this summer the natural-horsemanship instructor from Australia Stavros Steve Vergis. The concept of the seminar Most of the problems that we face with equines derive from the fact that they don’t trust us, they don’t respect us or are afraid of us. To build an appropriate rapport with our horse, first of all we should follow some groundwork programme and once we have done that, follow our riding programme. We should…

Equestrian in the Ancient Olympics: Did you know?
Today I read Xenophon’s On Horsemanship and Hipparchus and, looking at the introduction of each book, I found interesting information about the add of equestrian to the classical Olympic Games, and I would like to share it with you. Besides, as a Greek and equestrian, I couldn’t fail to write about equestrian and the Olympics, right? 🙂 Equestrian was introduced to the Olympics in the 33rd registered Olympiad, that is about 644 BC (I say “about” because the games took place alternatively every 49 and 50 months, as a period of eight years comprises of 99 moths, which is 96 stable months plus 3 intercalary months). It remained an Olympic sport until the abolition…

Urgent pledge for the University of Nottingham RDA group
Hi! It is my honor to have been chosen to coordinate Jumpstart, the first platform that raises awareness about the student-run projects of the University of Nottingham, which are at the core of our University’s engagement in the local communities in all three countries where UoN has campuses (United Kingdom, Malaysia, China). It was to my excitement to be informed that our first-ever campaign belongs to the University’s RDA group, of which I am a member! Our group is part of the University of Nottingham Equestrian Club and is amongst the most active volunteering groups of the University at the moment. RDA stands for Riding for the Disabled Association, a…
