A Beautiful Coach with Two Horses-The death of a great Greek composer
On 7 August 2015, Greece lost one of its greatest song-writers, Costas Virvos. He composed more than 2,000 songs, many of which have been characterized as classic, all sung by Greece’s greatest singers.
One of our favourite songs is “A Beautiful Coach With Two Horses”, sung by a famous classic Greek singer, Gregoris Bithikotsis. Here are the lyrics, translated into English (with an effort to make them make sense):
A beautiful coach with two horses
you bring me when I close my eyes (ie. when I die)
the wrong and absurd world
as a horseman for once to promenade
The one horse to be white
like the dreams I did as a child
The other horse to be black
like my bitter and infinite black life
[I want] to knock my ruthless whip
like my fate’s unbearable slapping
and to make it sound like a grievance
as from a sad bouzuki penury
The one horse to be white
like the dreams I made as a child
The other horse to be black
like my bitter and infinite black life
